BEautiful vengeance (2025)

Concert Band Grade 4.5

Duration - 8:06

If one could learn anything from ancient Greek mythology, it would be not to cross the gods. These stories are littered with tales of double crossings, betrayal and wrongdoings, all culminating in the most beautiful acts of vengeance. For centuries, legends have been passed down about three goddesses known as the furies, who carried out punishments for those who broke moral and legal codes. If a person broke an oath, they would suffer a punishment adequate for the crime, which could come from diseases, curses, or temporary madness. These punishments were seen as cruel, but fair retributions for the crime that had been committed.

Though many historical and literary figures like Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, Mr. Spock, and Michael Corleone have favoured the Code of Hammurabi’s sentiment “an eye for an eye,” there have also been those (though admittedly less cool) who champion the notion of “the best revenge is a life well lived”. These binary stances have been central to many moral and ethical debates facing humanity, all endeavouring to answer the question “when is enough enough?”.

Beautiful Vengeance takes listeners on a dark, mysterious, and complex journey through emotions—betrayal, anger, contempt, and finally resolution- however one perceives it. This piece attempts to capture the intense psychological and emotive consequences of our actions through rage-induced brass fanfares to battle-inspiring percussion solos. So, whether you choose to forgive the person who ate your leftovers or exact revenge on the composition professor who told you “you’re just not ready,” remember to choose wisely.
