about the composer

Hi, I’m Griffin.

Griffin Hook (he/him/his) is a Canadian Composer based in Thornhill, Ontario. Known for writing music that is cinematic and imaginative, Griffin’s unique compositional style blends traditional ensemble orchestration with creative film scoring energy to create exciting pieces and soundtracks that are enjoyable for musicians, conductors, ensembles, directors, game designers, and audiences alike.

In the band and ensemble scene, Griffin has an accessible and engaging collection of works that have been performed in several provinces across the country and around the globe; having pieces recorded, workshopped, & premiered by the University of Toronto Wind Symphony, University of Toronto Wind Ensemble, National Youth Band of Canada, Budapest Art Orchestra, and Philharmonic Wind Orchestra of Singapore. With his work described as fresh and animated, Griffin strives to create new music for band that highlights the beauty of Canadian nature, alongside exploring unique themes and concepts that evoke emotion.

During his undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music and postgraduate studies in Sheridan College’s Music Scoring for Screen & Stage program, Griffin has created original scores and soundtracks for Sheridan Animation, Game Design, Level Design & BFTV, UofT Computer Science, OCAD Digital Futures, and Centennial College Game-Art. Outside of Composition, Griffin mixes and masters reference recordings for his own work, is a two-time delegate of the York/OBA Wind Conductors’ Symposium, performs in a variety of wind ensembles and orchestras across the GTA as a trumpet player, and is further involved with the wind band world through experience as a personnel manager, treasurer, and librarian.

Griffin is the winner of the 2024 Howard Cable Memorial Prize in Composition awarded by the Canadian Band Association, a winner of the 2024 WASBE International Composition Contest as an emerging composer, winner of the 2024 CFMTA Student Composer Contest, and had his scores displayed at the 2024 Midwest Clinic. Griffin is also a three-time ORMTA Music Writing Competition Winner, two-time Kiwanis Original Composition Contest Winner, had his music featured as part of the Oakville Film Festival on multiple occasions, alongside winning other awards and honourable mentions in competitions at city and provincial levels for over a decade.
